It’s completely understandable to have some reservations when considering hiring a consultant. The unknown is scary. But, if you do your homework and thoroughly vet a potential consulting partner, these fears can be alleviated. What’s more important to focus on is the benefit that working with a consultant can bring you and your business. The reasons to work with a consultant can vary, but odds are, you can relate to one, or more, of these.

  1. Because you are insanely busy

The day-to-day operations of your business or department are enough to have to keep up with; this is especially true for small business owners who wear all of the hats! Hiring a consultant can help with those tasks you simply don’t have time for, so that you aren’t just getting by each day, you are actually growing.

2. Because you need an objective viewpoint

Often you are either too close to a problem or too invested in your current strategy to recognize a problem exists. A consultant can come in and objectively analyze your business practices and suggest improvements.

3. Because you need to fill an expertise gap

Let’s face it, we can’t all be experts at everything. But a consultant or consulting team can fill in those gaps where you may be missing in-house talent. These experts would be expensive to hire, and often-times your project isn’t large enough to justify having them full-time.

4. Because you need the resources

You know you have a problem to solve, but you simply don’t have the people power. You don’t want to have to pull your employees (or yourself) from your actual job and change priorities. A consultant is a perfect solution, especially for managing projects.

5. Because you need a quicker solution

Maybe you have the resources, but your employees are so busy that they can’t get to the project as fast as you’d like. Consultants are used to working with many different companies and have a fast learning curve, making onboarding easy and quick.

6. Because you need a change

Change is hard. Period. And even worse, businesses hate it. But, change is often needed. A consultant can come in and help you with the dirty work that comes with change, since they are considered the expert by employees they can more easily gain buy-in and help avoid dissension.

7. Because you need to reignite your entrepreneurial spirit

Have a great idea, but you don’t know what to do with it, or do you just know your business needs some innovation? A consultant can help you create processes that make it easy for new ideas to be heard and adopted, and channels for better communication and collaboration around those ideas.

8. Because you are brand new

Maybe you’re brand new to the business world or starting your third start-up. Either way, a consultant can be beneficial in providing you with the groundwork needed to be successful or by doing the grunt work and helping with your day-to-day operations.

Whatever your reason may be, it’s easy to justify the benefit in at least speaking with a consultant to see how they may be able to help you. Having a conversation can be a great way to help alleviate any fears you may have. Just remember, in the end, it’s all about the value that a consultant can bring to you and your business.
